Overview

ICB elements use ion-exchange media to attract and retain polar degradation products that pass through conventional mechanical filtration. These charged species—including organic acids, aldehydes, and ketones—are precursors to varnish deposits and contribute to servo valve stiction, bearing wear, and reduced fluid life.

Operating Principle
  • Proprietary ion-exchange resin creates strong electrostatic attraction for polar contaminants below 1 µm
  • Captures soft, dissolved oxidation byproducts that depth media cannot mechanically filter
  • Reduces acid number (AN) by adsorbing carboxylic acids before they attack system components
  • Improves fluid resistivity in phosphate ester systems (target >8 GΩ·cm for EHC applications)
Performance Characteristics
  • Acid removal capacity typically 2–4× higher than conventional Fuller's earth or activated alumina
  • Effective on mineral oils, PAO synthetics, and phosphate ester fire-resistant fluids
  • Operating temperature range: -20°C to +90°C (mineral/PAO) or +80°C max (phosphate ester)
  • Recommended flow rates: 2–10 gpm per element depending on contamination severity
Applications
  • Turbine lube and EHC systems experiencing varnish-related valve stiction
  • Hydraulic systems with elevated acid numbers (AN > 0.2 mg KOH/g)
  • Compressor oils showing early oxidation (RPVOT < 75% of new oil)
  • Kidney loop polishing circuits for continuous fluid conditioning
Installation Options
  • Inline: Install in return line for continuous treatment during operation
  • Offline kidney loop: Dedicated recirculation for accelerated fluid recovery
  • Portable filtration cart: Periodic treatment of multiple systems
